The United Nations (UN) has 17 Sustainable Development Goals which are the cornerstone of the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Agenda is the world’s roadmap for ending poverty, protecting the planet and tackling inequalities. You can read about all the 17 goals here and about the 2030 Agenda here.
The UN’s Sustainable Development Goal number 6 (SDG 6) is “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all” (SDG 6 details are available here).
In order to help the UN reach SDG 6 in its 2030 Agenda, the UN Secretary-General has created the UN’s first ever Special Envoy on Water.
The envoy will be Retno L.P. Marsudi of the Republic of Indonesia and she will commence the role on 1 November 2024. One of her responsibilities will include working with UN-Water on SDG 6, where UN-Water coordinates the UN’s work on water and sanitation. She will also represent the UN Secretary-General in global water processes. You can read more about the envoy here.
