Werribee River Association is affiliated with Waterkeeper Alliance Inc., and so can host the role of the Werribee Riverkeeper. Affiliation with Waterkeeper Alliance allows the Werribee Riverkeeper to support the voices of local communities within the catchment and advocate for the protection of the river and its catchment waterways.
The Alliance empowers Waterkeepers to build collective action that campaigns to tackle the world’s most pressing water issues.
With the guidance and support of the Riverkeeper, the Association’s staff and volunteers have developed knowledge, policy and behaviour change, through ongoing work in water quality, platypus and other wildlife surveys, flora research, rehabilitation initiatives, participation in integrated catchment management, natural resource management, strategic actions, and community engagement and education.
The success of the Waterkeeper movement lies with the fact that Waterkeepers are connected globally as a network, giving them collective power in their communities’ courtrooms, classrooms, and in the media.
